Smooth coffee, good experience

My first order from The Sumiyaki Way was for a Coffee Gift Set. I got it during a seasonal sale, which made the price point really attractive. Shipping was free because I spent over the threshold, which I appreciated. The set itself was well-packaged, and the included Shizuka Light Roast beans were a hit. The charcoal roasting really does make a difference in how smooth the coffee tastes. I'm definitely considering a subscription now for ongoing savings, felt like a solid purchase.

Always reliable, great coffee

I've ordered the Yūgen Signature Blend several times now, and it's always consistent. The low acidity is what keeps me coming back; it's just so much smoother than other coffees I've tried. My last order arrived two days earlier than the tracking said, which was a nice surprise. Good to know I can count on them for my morning brew.

Detailed thoughts on my order

I recently ordered their Yūgen Signature Blend in whole bean form. The ordering process was straightforward on their website; I found it easy to add to cart and checkout. Delivery took about 4 business days, which was within the estimated window. The packaging was robust, keeping the beans fresh. I brew it as espresso, and it consistently produces a rich, low-acid shot. I haven't needed customer support, but the overall experience was very positive. It's a noticeable step up from the usual store-bought beans in terms of flavor and smoothness. I'm happy with the quality.

Is the charcoal roasting thing a gimmick? Or does it actually make the coffee taste different?

C Chloe A. 1 month ago
It's legit. I was skeptical too but it definitely has a smoother, less bitter taste. Hard to describe but it's really good.

Nah, not a gimmick. It's a traditional Japanese thing. I think it contributes to the low acidity they talk about.

Thinking of trying the Yūgen blend. How does it compare to Shizuka? What's the main difference?

K Katie Evans 3 days ago
Yūgen is their signature, more balanced and a bit darker I'd say. Shizuka is lighter, more floral notes if you're into that.

Yūgen is super smooth, good all-rounder. Shizuka is a bit brighter, good for pour-over, but if you like a classic espresso, go Yūgen first.

What's the deal with returns? Like if I don't like the coffee, can I send it back?

R Ryan Lopez 3 weeks ago
Pretty sure for coffee beans, once opened, it's a bit tricky for hygiene reasons. You'd probably need to check their policy, but most places don't take back opened food items.

Yeah, returns for food stuff are usually only for damaged goods or if they sent the wrong thing. Not just 'didn't like it'.

Are these guys ethical with their sourcing? Like, do they pay farmers fairly and stuff?

S Sandra Jones 1 week ago
I've seen them mention ethical sourcing on their site, I think it's in one of their FAQs. They seem pretty transparent about it.

L Leah Brown 1 week ago
They talk about it, but don't always give super detailed reports like some of the super high-end roasters. I'd say they're conscious, but maybe not 100% certified-traceable like some others.

Thinking about getting a subscription. How easy is it to change the frequency or pause it if I go on holiday?

C Chloe C. 1 month ago
Super easy. You can manage it right from your account dashboard. I've paused mine a couple of times for vacations, no fuss.

E Emma Davis 1 month ago
Yeah, their subscription system is pretty flexible. I changed my grind size mid-sub and it was just a few clicks. No need to contact support or anything.
